The Reasons Watermelon Juice Should Be Your Go-To Summer Drink
By KATHERINE BECK
A refreshing slice of fresh watermelon is great on a hot summer day, but it can get messy when juice drips down your chin or annoying when you try to politely spit out seeds. A good alternative is a thirst-quenching glass of watermelon juice, which will deliver all the refreshing, healthy goodness of watermelon without the hassle.
There are lots of reasons to love watermelon, from being a satisfying and inexpensive picnic snack to the numerous nutrients and health benefits it contains. The fruit gets its red color from lycopene, an antioxidant that helps cleanse your body of damaging free radicals, which are linked to diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Aside from containing 60% more antioxidant-rich lycopene than a tomato, watermelon also contains high levels of Vitamins A, B6, and C, and is packed with fiber. These nutrients help protect your skin on a hot sunny day and keep you hydrated, while the fiber promotes gut health.
At 92% water and with just 30 calories for two-thirds of a cup, reaching for a glass of watermelon juice is a no-brainer. For your next picnic day, swap out that watermelon for a pitcher of refreshing, thirst-quenching watermelon juice, or to mix it up even more, try making some watermelon lemonade or a round of watermelon margaritas.
