The Reason Smoked Salmon Pairs So Well With Avocado
By AUTUMN SWIERS
Smoked salmon and avocado are energizing, healthy, and delicious, and they make a great pairing both flavor-wise and nutrition-wise. Both salmon and avocados share a specific type of omega-3 fatty acid that can reduce heart disease risk, prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis, and promote neurological and ocular health.
Salmon and avocado are also good sources of protein; per the USDA, 100 grams of salmon provides almost 20 grams of protein, while a half-cup of avocado packs 6 grams. Both foods are also mood boosters, as avocados may decrease the risk of depression, while salmon is a good source of tryptophan, which helps regulate sleep and boosts serotonin.
From a culinary perspective, the saltiness of smoked salmon pairs well with the more neutral and vegetal base of avocado. Adding sliced red onions and salty capers to your smoked salmon and avocado toast will give it a tangy component and add texture, which is just one idea to maximize the potential of this classic combination.
