The Premade Mix That Will Amp Up Your Meatloaf
By AUTUMN SWIERS
The greatest thing about meatloaf is that it can be customized to fit any preference, whether you choose to make a classic ketchup-glazed loaf or add peppers, BBQ sauce, or other twists. If you love meatloaf, but find that making it from scratch — much less adding extra flair — takes too long, you should try this shortcut ingredient.
Adding dry onion soup mix to meatloaf originated in a 1936 General Electric Kitchen Institute cookbook, "The New Art of Modern Cookery." Their recipe includes just six ingredients (eggs, water, ketchup, ground beef, breadcrumbs, and a packet of onion soup mix) that are stirred together and then baked in a loaf pan.
The result of this low-effort recipe is a classic meatloaf with a surprisingly savory umami kick. If you're willing to include a few more ingredients, try adding chopped onion and Worcestershire sauce to bring out the soup mix's flavor; either way, the meatloaf will last in the fridge for four days and in the freezer for three months.
