The Original 3 Musketeers Candy Bars Were Way Different
By JENNIFER AMOS
3 Musketeers is a candy bar classic, consisting of fluffy nougat made with egg whites that is shaped into rectangles and dipped in chocolate. However, when 3 Musketeers was added to the Mars company’s lineup in 1932, the "3" part of the name actually made more sense.
The original 3 Musketeers "bar" actually consisted of three smaller bars in one wrapper. Each mini chocolate bar contained a different flavor of nougat; one had vanilla, one had chocolate, and the last had strawberry, and the whole bar cost a measly 5 cents upon its debut.
Unfortunately, the U.S. began rationing sugar for World War I in the 1930's, which made it too expensive for Mars to produce the three flavored bars inside the 3 Musketeers wrapper. From 1945 onward, 3 Musketeers was sold as one candy bar with the most popular nougat flavor: chocolate.
