The One Canned Chickpea Brand You Should Not Splurge On
BY LUNA CHRISTINA LUPUS
Since there are a plethora of grocery store chickpeas, Tasting Table tested 12 canned chickpea brands and ranked them worst to best. The lowest ranking on the list was Iberia.
Iberia chickpeas are fairly small, which may be why they came out so dry when our taste tester tried to roast them. Unfortunately, Iberia's canned chickpeas lack crispiness.
Another issue was the flavor — while the other brands had a noticeably better flavor, Iberia was too sweet and overall tasted a bit off. In addition, the aquafaba was too thin.
Iberia canned chickpeas also contain disodium EDTA to prevent discoloration of the chickpeas, and research suggests this additive could irritate the digestive system.
