Knafeh is a Middle Eastern dessert with thin strands of phyllo or semolina dough fried to crispy perfection. Though popular across the region, the dish's origin is a mystery.
There are various renditions of the dish that are popular in different parts of the region. However, when it comes to their origin, historians don't even know the century.
Some suggest it was created during the 10th century in what is today Damascus and enjoyed as a breakfast. Others say it first appeared in the 15th century in Egypt.
