The James Beard Awards Announced Its 2023 America's Classics Winners
By AUTUMN SWIERS
The James Beard Foundation has announced its 2023 America's Classics winners, one of the most prestigious awards in the culinary world. According to the Foundation, a restaurant must be locally owned, "have timeless appeal," and serve regional dishes to qualify as an America's Classic establishment, and only six restaurants made the cut.
One winner is the Manago Hotel, the home of the oldest active restaurant in Hawaii, opened in 1917 and run today by the Manago family’s fourth generation. Another is Joe’s Bakery & Coffee Shop in a East Austin, Texas neighborhood, open since 1935 and serving its community with traditional Mexican pastries and Tex-Mex fare.
San Juan's La Casita Blanca is a family-owned Puerto Rican restaurant serving affordable comfort food since 1980, and the Foundation notes that it's decorated like "your tía's or abuela's house." Another winner is Montana’s Pekin Noodle Parlor, the oldest continuously-operating family-owned Chinese restaurant in America.
Nezinscot Farm, the first organic dairy farm in Maine that opened a café in 1978, has expanded to a bakery, charcuterie, and fromagerie. Lastly, Wagner's Village Inn in Oldenburg, Indiana cooks some of its dishes without following set recipes, a truly unique trait, and serves delicious southern classics in a wood-paneled dining room.
