The Ingredient You Can Add To Coffee For A Health Boost
By MICHELLE WELSCH
Since the seventh century, residents of the Himalayan regions have added butter to tea to create a warm, satisfying drink that helps keep the digestive system healthy. Butter tea inspired lifestyle guru David Asprey to create "Bulletproof coffee," or coffee with butter added — but if that's too far-out for you, try this addition instead.
For those who are lactose intolerant or limit their dairy intake, ghee is an ingredient that delivers tons of health benefits without unpleasant side effects. Ghee is made by simmering milk over low heat to remove impurities, so it has extremely low levels of lactose and casein, which are the root of most people’s intolerance of dairy products.
Ghee is light, buttery, and caramel-y with a nutty flavor; it's rich in calcium and heart-healthy fatty acids, can reduce inflammation and cholesterol levels, and contains vitamins A, D, E and K, to benefit eye health, the immune system, and metabolism. To enjoy coffee with ghee, simply add a spoonful into your cup and blend.
