The History Behind America's Oldest Operating Steakhouse
BY Luna Christina Lupus
First opening its doors in 1868, the Old Homestead Steakhouse is the oldest steakhouse in America and remains in business well over 150 years later.
The restaurant planted its roots in the Meatpacking District of New York City. Although the neighborhood has changed, it still stands in the same place.
Around 70 years ago, Harry Sherry bought the steakhouse after starting as a dishwasher. Harry's grandsons, Greg and Marc, are the current owners of the place.
The spirit of the Old Homestead Steakhouse hasn't changed much since the 19th century, with Greg Sherry stating, "Why change something that has worked for 150 years?"
The steakhouse's interior is rustic, with red leather sofas, carpeted floors, and a fairly quiet ambiance. Outside, guests are greeted by a giant cow sculpture named Annabelle.
The restaurant has grown over the years. What used to be a space with only five tables and a bar has grown into three floors and up to 800 customers per night.
