The Gelatin Trick To Clean Used Frying Oil
By MOLLY HARRIS
Deep frying takes a lot of oil, and you may feel like you're wasting your money when you toss out a whole pan full of oil once you're done. There's a simple and effective solution that will allow you to easily clean your used frying oil so it can be reused, and it uses an ingredient you might already have in your pantry: powdered gelatin.
When you mix gelatin with hot water, it forms a gel-like substance, which contains molecules called collagen that can trap impurities in the frying oil. Once your used oil has cooled to room temperature, you’ll mix gelatin with water in a separate bowl and stir until the gelatin dissolves completely, then you can add the mixture to the oil.
Slowly pour the gelatin mixture into the pot of oil while stirring with a wooden spoon, then keep stirring until the gelatin has fully mixed. Cover the pot and place it in the fridge for a few hours and the gelatin should solidify with the impurities trapped inside it, so all you’ll have to do is remove the layer of gelatin and your oil will be clean.
