The French Liqueur That's The Closest Substitute For Chartreuse
BY COURTNEY ISEMAN
The Chartreuse shortage that began during the pandemic is still going strong, but the good news is there’s a close substitute that’s readily available: génépy.
Also known as génépi, genepy, or genepì, génépy is a vibrant herbal liqueur with a yellowish-green color, 45% alcohol content, and herbal, spicy, earthy, citrusy notes.
Chartreuse is unique because it’s made in France by Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse monastery, with over 100 botanicals in a recipe that traces back to 1605.
By comparison, génépy is a bit sweeter with a slightly lower alcohol content, and it incorporates shrubs from the wormwood family, giving it an absinthe characteristic.
However, génépy remains a perfect swap for green Chartreuse because they contain similar ingredients, making it an easy one-to-one substitution in any cocktail recipe.
