The French Cake That Inspired Starbucks Japan's Valentine's Day Frappuccino
BY WENDY LEIGH
Starbucks is known for releasing special holiday drinks, often with indulgent ingredients and lots of visual appeal. Starbucks Japan is literally taking the cake for Valentine’s Day 2023 with their new Valentine’s Day Frappuccino, which is based on a beloved, classic cake originated by French pastry chef Cyriaque Gavillon.
The Opera Frappuccino debuts on February 3, and just like opera cake, named by Gavillon after the French Opera House, the Opera Frappuccino features decadent layers of coffee, chocolate (powder, chips, and sauce), sponge cake, and cream. Glittering powdered gold dust is sprinkled on the drink's chocolate glacage sauce topping.
Entabe describes the Opera Frappuccino as "three-dimensional deliciousness," similar to the construction of a real opera cake with its many layers. In addition, Starbucks Japan offers another Frapp, the Fondant Chocolat Frappuccino, and a warm version called the Fondant Chocolat Almond Milk Mocha for Valentine’s Day.
