The Flour Hack To Swiftly Ripen An Avocado
BY SIMONE GERBER
Avocados are beloved for their creamy, delicious taste, but unripe avocados have neither of these qualities. There's an easy solution: bury the unripe fruit in flour to ripen.
This unorthodox method is backed by science. Avocados ripen through the release of ethylene gas, and burying them in flour means there's no place for this gas to escape.
The flour concentrates ethylene around the fruit. It also prevents moisture buildup that can lead to mold, unlike ripening the avocado in a container.
Place the unripe avocado in a paper bag, add flour until the fruit is submerged, seal the bag, and leave it at room temperature. After about two days, your avocado will ripen.
Rinse off the avocado, pat dry, and enjoy. This method is simple and convenient, but don't reuse the flour, as it may be contaminated with harmful pathogens.
