The Favorite Foods Of Great American Authors
BY Emily Hunt
Mark Twain
When Mark Twain (pen name for Samuel Clemens) felt homesick, he craved then-classic American foods like fresh butter beans, Illinois prairie hens, and Missouri partridge.
He also enjoyed Olympia oysters at the Occidental in San Francisco. However, many of these dishes are hard to find now, especially the oysters, whose population has now reduced.
John Steinbeck
John Steinbeck loved eating and cooking with locally sourced foods. However, he also had a quick- and easy-to-prepare yet tasty fallback meal: pork posole.
His version of the dish, a recipe borrowed from his screenwriter friend Jack Wagner, was admittedly plain and comprised only "a can of chili and a can of hominy."
Emily Dickinson
Famous poet Emily Dickinson was also a renowned neighborhood baker who loved baking cakes, bread, and the like. Gingerbread was arguably her favorite bread to bake.
Her neighbors absolutely adored her gingerbread. The poet often lowered baskets of gingerbread to children in her neighborhood and gifted her delicious bake to her friends.
Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway's favorite meal is also said to be his last meal. Before his death by suicide, he spent an evening savoring a New York strip steak with his wife.
The steak was accompanied by a baked potato and Caesar salad. Hemingway then washed it all down with a glass of Bordeaux at Michel's Christiania Restaurant in Ketchum, Idaho.
Nathaniel Hawthorne
It wasn't unusual for Nathaniel Hawthorne to have dessert after dessert post-dinner. He also loved fruits, but his favorite was a simple chocolate bread pudding.
The author is so known for loving the dessert that the Hawthorne Hotel’s menu lists it as "Nathaniel's Bread Pudding." The hotel uses Nathaniel's recipe and adds a few garnishes.
