The Easy Swap For Savory French Toast
By MICHELLE WELSCH
Sometimes, weekend mornings call for filling dishes to satisfy growling stomachs, and as delicious as classic French toast is, sweets in the morning aren't for everyone. For those of us who like savory breakfasts, or who make French toast all the time and want to try a new twist, try this ingredient swap to transform this dish.
To turn down the sweetness of French toast, reach for bread that's more savory, such as olive bread, garlic ciabatta, rosemary loves, or even zucchini bread. If you don't have these kinds of bread in your kitchen, a plain sourdough, wheat, or a gluten-free option can all work, especially once you add spices, herbs, and other flavorings.
Garlic salt, oregano, chives, and other savory seasonings can replace cinnamon, vanilla, and honey, and you can even flavor the eggy soaking liquid with stronger ingredients like curry paste. Instead of drizzling the warm toast with honey or maple syrup, try olive oil, a fig balsamic reduction, and/or pieces of crunchy sea salt.
