The Dock Pudding Cooking Competition Robbie Coltrane Almost Won
By NICO DANILOVICH
British actor and comedian Robbie Coltrane, who died on Oct. 14, 2022, at the age of 72, is best known as Hagrid in the "Harry Potter" films; however, his contributions to the culinary world were lesser known. Coltrane nearly won a dock pudding cooking competition while filming his travel television show, "Robbie Coltrane's B Road Britain.”
In one episode, Coltrane stopped in Mytholmroyd, Yorkshire, where dock pudding originated and the World Dock Pudding Competition is hosted yearly. Dock pudding is a breakfast dish made using leaves from the bistort plant mixed with nettles, oatmeal, onions, and seasoning, fried with rendered bacon fat, and served with bacon and eggs.
Doing his due diligence, Coltrane ventured into the local greenery and picked the weeds to make his pudding for the competition, and although “Ingredients are never varied," Coltrane noted, he broke tradition by adding some Stilton cheese. Mayor Betty Ward called his dish "... nice and sweet,” and in the end, Coltrane won second place.
