The Difference Between A Cheesesteak And Chopped Cheese Sandwich
BY STEPHANIE FRIEDMAN
New York and Philadelphia are home to two rival sandwiches, the Philly cheesesteak and the chopped cheese, each with distinct ingredients and preparation methods.
A Philly cheesesteak is fairly simple, made of just a hoagie roll, thinly sliced beef, and melted cheese with optional toppings like onions, peppers, mushrooms, or jalapenos.
The secret of a Philly cheesesteak lies in its preparation. The beef is thinly sliced and cooked with optional onions and diced peppers until it’s melt-in-your-mouth tender.
The sandwich was topped with melted provolone when it was first created in the 1930s, but today you can use other cheeses like Swiss, American, Velveeta, or Cheez Whiz.
The chopped cheese is a more recent invention, created in the 1990s and comprised of
ground beef, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion served on a hero roll.
A chopped cheese gets its name from chopping up burger patties to get the juicy meat of the sandwich before cooking it with diced onions.
Aside from the meat, the major difference is that chopped cheese has more wiggle room in the cheese department and gets topped with fresh veggies like lettuce and tomato.
