The Controversial Ingredient In One Of The World's Most Expensive Soups
BY AUTUMN SWIERS
As of 2016, one of the most expensive and controversial soups is served at the Norwood Chinese Restaurant in Australia. At $450 per bowl, it contains nearly one kilo of shark fins.
Shark fin soup was enjoyed by Chinese royalty. Nowadays, it’s common for the fins to be cut off a living shark, a practice that wildlife conservation groups seek to ban.
Despite leading to a steep decline in global shark populations, shark fin soup still retains a fanbase in East Asian countries, especially China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore.
