The Classic Humble Sandwich That Franklin D. Roosevelt Loved

Despite having sophisticated cocktail tastes, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had a humble taste in food, and loved a classic grilled cheese sandwich.
FDR served through the Great Depression and World War II when food shortages and rationing were common. The White House menu underwent changes to be a model for the country.
Food was selected for economy and nutrition rather than taste, so a grilled cheese sandwich was a luxurious treat at the time. It was also a childhood favorite of FDR.
