The Chinese Delicacy You Can Now Buy At Costco By The Case
BY Nancy Parode
Costco is now selling century eggs, a Chinese delicacy dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) that can be made from various poultry eggs, including duck and quail.
Century eggs are preserved in salt, clay, wood ash, and quicklime. They were wrapped in rice hulls in Ming China, but many now put them in a plastic bag inside a lidded pot.
Made by Kaiping City Xuri Eggs Products Co., Ltd., these century eggs are duck eggs. The listed ingredients are eggs, water, and salt, but more were likely used for preservation.
Redditor kawi-bawi-bo found them in Costco’s San Jose, California, warehouse. He says they have an ammonia smell, but eating them in congee (savory rice porridge) masks the stench.
You can eat them as appetizers, dipped in soy sauce, too. People eat century eggs in more elaborate congees (like pork congee), with chilled tofu, or as part of a salad as well.
Per kawi-bawi-bo, the case at the San Jose Costco offers 20 separately-wrapped eggs and costs $13.99, but you may want to check with your local Costco to see if they’re available.
