The California Food Trail Julia Child Devotees Can't Miss
By ERIN SHAW
Julia Child helped bring French food to American home cooks with her unpretentious approach to cooking and food. Child was known to appreciate a variety of food from Costco’s hot dog combo to boeuf bourguignon, and if you find yourself in Santa Barbara, you can follow in her footsteps to visit some of her favorite local spots.
Julia Child spent substantial amounts of time in Santa Barbara throughout her life, and thanks to the Santa Barbara Culinary Excellence organization, you can taste some of Child’s favorite foods in the area. Julia Child had many favorite places to dine from Carpinteria up to Santa Ynez, and her favorite haunts are all featured on their Julia Child Food Trail.
Stops along the way range from uber-casual fries at In-n-Out and hotdogs at Costco to an upscale steak dinner at Hitching Post II and wine tastings in the Santa Rita Hills. With fancy and casual restaurants, the itinerary has something for everyone, from the die-hard Julia Child fan to the average foodie looking for a new favorite place.
