Breadcrumbs add crunchiness to a gooey mac and cheese, but if you want even more crunch and a buttery flavor, try swapping the breadcrumbs for Ritz crackers.
Ritz crackers will add the crunch that you're looking for, just like the breadcrumbs, but will also bring in a delicious buttery flavor to make the creamy dish even more decadent.
You can use other crackers, so long as they are buttery. Crackers without butteriness are likely to be far too dry, and will only get dryer during the baking process.
The butter crackers bring a richness to the dish that dry crackers like saltines wouldn't. Trust us, the difference is night and day.
