The Brand Behind Costco's Kirkland Signature Honey Is Complicated
BY JOHN TOLLEY
Colorado-based honey giant Rice's Honey is responsible for what goes into bottles of Kirkland Signature 100% U.S. Raw, Unfiltered Honey — but only a small portion.
The bottle used to be billed as "100% Local," but not every state has enough beekeepers and hives to ensure that each bottle matches the description.
More of a honey processor, Rice's works with a network of beekeepers across the U.S. to supply the honey it packages, as each state isn't an equally fertile ground for the bees.
There are places where Costco can apply a different label, such as in Southern California, where production is safe to bill the product as "100% SoCal Raw, Unfiltered Honey."
