The Best Way To Season Sweet Potato Fries To Curb Oversweetness
By STEPHANIE FRIEDMAN
The uses for sweet potatoes go far beyond holiday pies and casseroles, including sweet potato smoothies, sweet potato pancakes, and of course, sweet potato fries. Sweet potato fries are often seasoned with other sweet ingredients like cinnamon, but you can also cut down on the sweetness by using different herbs and spices.
To balance the natural sugars in your sweet potato fries, try earthy dried herbs like oregano, parsley, rosemary, basil, and thyme. If you want a classic fry flavor, keep it simple with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder, or use red pepper flakes, paprika, Cajun or Tajin seasoning, or chipotle powder for a little spice.
These seasonings will add depth of savory flavor without completely overpowering the potatoes' sweetness, creating a nice contrast. Add the spices to your sweet potato fries after cutting and tossing them in oil, but before cooking them, and enjoy them with a condiment like marshmallow dip, Sriracha, chipotle lime mayo, or garlic aioli.
