The Best Subtle Additions To Add Texture To Key Lime Bar Crust
By KATHERINE BECK
Key lime pie is one of the greatest classic American desserts, made of a silky custard of lime juice and condensed milk in a graham cracker crust. Key lime bars are a more low-key variant that lets you enjoy key lime pie without using a pie dish, and to really elevate this super-simple treat, try adding some extras to the cracker crust.
A graham cracker crust is extremely easy to make and satisfying on its own, but nuts like pistachios, pecans, almonds, or walnuts play up the graham's inherent nutty flavor. Simply chop up or crush the nuts until they're fine enough to be mixed into the crushed graham crackers and butter for even more delicious key lime bars.
If you have nut allergies, you can simply replace graham crackers with other crackers or cookies to fancy up your key lime bars. A shortbread crust, whether homemade or made out of premade shortbread cookies, adds instant elegance, while Nilla Wafers add a subtle vanilla flavor and saltine crackers create a sweet-and-salty contrast.
