The Best Method To Clean Plastic Cutting Boards And Remove Stains
BY BRIAN UDALL
Although affordable, plastic cutting boards can accumulate cuts over time and harbor harmful bacteria. To clean them properly, it's best to wash them by hand.
It is safe to clean plastic cutting boards in the dishwasher, but cleaning them this way regularly can cause them to warp, decreasing the overall lifespan.
For heavy-duty cleaning, make a solution with one teaspoon of bleach and four cups of water. Use a sponge and gloves to scrub the board, and then rinse with water.
For a natural cleaning agent, cut open some lemons, squeeze them over the board, and allow it to soak. This won't remove any stains, but it is a natural antibacterial agent.
Your second non-bleach option is to mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and 2 tablespoons of food-grade hydrogen peroxide.
Slather the paste on your plastic cutting boards and allow it to sit overnight. In the morning, rinse it with soap and water, and you’ll see an improvement in the stains.
