The Best Condiment To Spice Up Your Burgers
By TALIN VARTANIAN
The sky's the limit when it comes to burger condiments, from the traditional mustard and ketchup to a breakfast burger with hash browns and a fried egg to new favorites like avocado and bacon. However, there's one type of condiment that is the absolute best for spicing up your burgers.
Sambal Oelek, which primarily consists of salt and red chili peppers, can ‌increase the umami and spiciness in your burger. This spicy chili paste is popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, and is usually used in dishes such as chicken fried rice and chicken satay, but can be used in a variety of dishes, including burgers.
To try Sambal Oelek, you can add a spoonful of the thick paste as is to a burger or any dish for fresh, spicy chili flavor, or try Martha Stewart’s “extra-special sauce” recipe. Simply mix Sambal Oelek with ketchup, mayo, and a bit of pickle juice for a perfect burger condiment.
