The Best Coffee-To-Water Ratio For A French Press Is Up To You
BY ANNA STAROPOLI
When making coffee with a French press, the ratio of grounds to water comes down to whether you like coffee stronger or lighter, but there is a base ratio you can start from.
Start with a standard of 17 milliliters of water for every 1 gram of coffee beans you grind. From there, you can lower the amount of water or increase it depending on your tastes.
The 1:17 starting point should be a good baseline, but some guides suggest starting with a ratio of 1:15 or 1:16, showing that there really isn’t one perfect ratio.
Most people will probably find their sweet spot between a 1:15 to 1:18 ratio, but if not, more water can be added or reduced until you find your perfect French press formula.
