The Best Canned Fish To Add To Avocado Toast

Avocado toast in its most basic form contains plenty of healthy fats and nutrients from the avocado, paired with a slice of griddled toast to pad your stomach. If you want to pack in even more nutrition, adding a certain kind of tinned fish is an easy and accessible twist that will level up your toast from a snack to a complete meal.
Cardel Reid, executive chef of restaurant Dmitrianna, tells Food & Wine that sardines are "a great alternative protein option for avocado toast—served on sourdough with guacamole and topped with an over-easy egg with heirloom tomato slices and a drizzle of oil." Reid says that sardines' briny, fermented flavor is a definite plus here.
Sardines, like avocados, are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which promote brain health and reduce the risk of heart problems, according to WebMD. They are also rich in vitamin D and vitamin B12, which support strong bones and nerve function, and small fish like sardines also have a lower environmental impact.
