The Award-Winning Scotch Whisky Sam Heughan Helped Create
By MICHELLE WELSCH
Scottish actor Sam Heughan of "Outlander" once decided to create an alcohol that represented his heritage, so he set out on tastings and distillery tours to craft his own whisky blend. Heughan took a role in logo design, cork tests, and travel and temperature experiments before finally developing his own award-winning whisky label.
Heughan's whisky, the Sassenach, is made of aged and blended single malts and an organic 20-year-old single grain that is matured in Madeira wine casks, coloring the drink with a spicy, fruity essence. The 46% ABV whisky delivers cinnamon, caramel, and apricot notes before filling palates with whispers of honey and vanilla fudge.
The whisky ended up winning double gold at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and again in 2021, and won at both the 2021 New York World and European Wine and Spirits exhibitions. Bottles cost around $100 and the liquor is suitable for all occasions, and has a pour that’s long, dry, and free from "whisky burn" effects.
