Switch Out The Marshmallows For A Sweet Twist On Your Rice Krispies Treats
BY KYLE GRACE MILLS
Rice Krispies treats are a nostalgic dessert made of the puffed rice cereal, marshmallows, butter, and vanilla. For a twist on this classic treat, add a boost of nutty flavor.
Melted marshmallows are the glue that hold these cereal squares together, but a combination of invert (AKA liquid) sugar and nut or seed butter works just as well.
Invert sugar is essentially any liquid sugar like honey, syrup, or molasses. For an 8-inch pan of Rice Krispies treats, use a ½ cup of invert sugar and ⅓ cup of nut butter.
To make a larger 9x13 pan, use ¾ each of sugar and butter. Try any sugar or butter you please, though keep in mind that some sweeteners like molasses are very strong.
Simply mix all the ingredients except the Rice Krispies, then mix the cereal in. You can even boil butter, honey, and sugar together to create a toffee to meld the cereal together.
