Spice Up Your Next Whiskey Sour With Muddled Jalapeño
BY SIMONE GERBER
A whiskey sour is made with whiskey, sugar, lemon juice, and egg whites. To challenge your palette, give it a heated addition and throw in some muddled jalapeños.
The spiciness of jalapeños stimulates your senses, while the sugar and acid from the rest of the drink work to neutralize some of the capsaicin in the pepper.
The jalapeño brings both a spicy flavor and a vegetal note that will brighten the drink. This brings the layers of complexity up to five: bitter, sweet, sour, spicy, and earthy.
Smooth, unembellished jalapeños have a milder spice level, while streakier ones have an extra kick of spice. For more intensity, leave the white inner membrane intact.
