Ranking Store-Bought Gluten-Free Bagels From Worst To Best
BY Melissa Cabey
8. BFree
BFree’s plain bagels are disappointingly soft to touch, and the first bite feels like biting into sand. The bagels crumble between the teeth and have an odd aftertaste.
The flavor isn't noticeable — which is good — and the bagel doesn't keep disintegrating inside the mouth after the first bite, but the initial texture issue overshadows the taste.
7. Carbonaut
Carbonaut’s plain bagels are a fine low-carb option, but they sadly dissolve in the mouth when chewed. They're a bit dry and lack that moist chewiness in the center.
That said, the bagels taste good and have no signs of a fake sugar taste or odd flavors that stick out, which is a win for both low-carbohydrate and gluten-free alternatives.
6. Udi's
Udi's plain bagels have a strong, fresh-baked smell but feel dry and grainy. You can feel the grainy texture on the tongue after a few chews into the first bite.
The bagels quickly disintegrate inside the mouth and leave no substantial texture by the time they're swallowed. However, they taste nice and neutral, which is definitely a plus.
5. O'Doughs
O'Doughs bagel thins aim to be low-carb by being smaller than usual. They feel moist and soft to touch, but we prefer a sturdy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior.
The texture is fluffy and not grainy at all, which is enjoyable. These bagel thins don't compare to real, bakery-made bagels, but they have a pleasant taste and nice consistency.
4. Whole Foods 365
Whole Foods 365’s gluten-free bagels are the same size as their gluten-filled variety. The sturdy bagels look and feel like regular bagels and have a nice flavor.
They're ever-so-slightly sweet but still feel neutral and plain tasting. However, they disintegrate after a few chews, losing the same sturdy and chewy texture from the first chew.
