Pumpple Cake: The Decadent Nesting Doll Of A Dessert
By MICHELLE WELSCH
As the holiday season approaches, you might come across that age-old question of apple pie or pumpkin pie, but what if there was a way to avoid having to choose one pie or the other? Enter the Pumpple cake, the turducken of the dessert world, that might settle the debate once and for all.
Like the turducken — a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a boneless chicken — the Pumpple cake is a layered concoction; it consists of pumpkin and apple pies baked into cake layers and slathered with classic vanilla buttercream frosting. The dessert is the creation of the Flying Monkey bakery in Philadelphia, where a slice will cost you $8, or $75 for the whole cake.
Alternatively, you can make the cake at home, but just make sure both the apple and pumpkin pies are fully baked — or opt for ready-made store-bought pies — before placing each into a cake pan and covering with your cake batter. Once you get the hang of it, you can experiment with your cake and pie flavors to your heart’s — and stomach’s — content.
