Pike Place Wasn't Actually The Location Of The Very First Starbucks' Store
BY Marina S.
It's a common misconception that the first Starbucks store was erected in Pike Place Market — Seattle's famous outdoor farmer's market. However, that isn't really true.
While the Starbucks located at Pike Place Market is advertised as "The First Starbucks," it would be more accurate to say it's the oldest, with a longevity of almost 50 years.
However, the actual first Starbucks opened in 1971, a few blocks from the Pike Place location on the corner of Virginia Street and Western Avenue.
Located in a now-demolished structure formerly known as the Rhode Island Building, this original Starbucks was more of a roastery that sold beans than a cafe.
In late 1976, the Rhode Island Building was demolished, forcing the Starbucks location to move down the street to where it still operates today.
