One Robust Spice Will Bring Out Vibrant Flavors (& Colors) In Carrot Cake
By MICHELLE WELSCH
Bakers have come up with many ways to customize the infinitely versatile carrot cake, from folding orange zest into the batter to using chunks of candied ginger for more spice.
A great, more unconventional addition is a spice that can be mixed into both your carrot cake batter and icing: turmeric, which adds an appealing bright color and richer taste.
Just a few sprinkles of turmeric can enhance other spices you add to your carrot cake, such as cinnamon and ginger, and help bring out the natural sweetness of the carrots.
This bright golden spice also brings plenty of antioxidants and a beautiful vibrant color to the cake, which contrasts wonderfully with a white cream cheese or vanilla icing.
You can add a bit of turmeric to your frosting as well, creating a double dose of orange, further reinforcing the spice's flavor, and ensuring that your icing isn't one-note sweet.
