Never Skip This First Step When Using A Dutch Oven
BY AUTUMN SWIERS
Dutch ovens are versatile, tough, and easy to care for, but to get the most out of your Dutch oven, don't forget to give it a generous layer of oil before using it.
Generally, a Dutch oven is made of enamel-coated cast iron. While the enamel makes it easier to clean, it doesn't have the same non-stick properties as unfinished cast iron.
To protect the enamel and prevent food from sticking to and scalding the pan, you should apply a generous coating of a fat or other liquid to cover the bottom of the pot.
The oil helps the heat spread evenly across the bottom of the Dutch oven and prevents any food from sticking to protect the enamel coating.
