Most Starbucks Use This Exact Espresso Machine
BY WENDY LEIGH
The machines at Starbucks that churn out drinks across the globe come from a single Swiss manufacturer, Thermoplan AG, who exclusively built their Mastrena espresso maker.
Mastrena came as part of a revival plan during 2008's economic downturn and was custom built with features important to Starbucks under collaboration with then-CEO Howard Schultz.
A specific feature built into the machine was the ability to hold multiple cups at a time, which streamlined the preparation process and ensured consistent high-quality shots.
It was also designed to have a lower height so that there is no barrier between Starbucks baristas and coffee customers while the drinks are being prepared.
Additional considerations in the Mastrena designed specifically for Starbucks were high-tech needs for full automation, built-in grinding, efficiency, speed, and high turnover.
