Make Unbeatable Egg Salad Using One Tangy Ingredient
BY AUSTIN HAVENS-BOWEN
Most egg salad recipes hinge on dollops of mayonnaise to create a creamy dish, but tartar sauce is one unexpected tangy upgrade that can take its flavor to whole another level.
Tartar sauce is creamy and tangy, so it adds more flavor than mayonnaise. It usually has diced pickles or pickle relish and herbs that add layers of acidity and herby freshness.
The diced pickles also give a subtle crunch to contrast with the other soft and creamy ingredients. For this upgrade, you simply swap mayo with tartar sauce in an egg salad recipe.
Start with a ⅓ cup of tartar sauce for every four large hard-boiled eggs, then adjust to taste. Meld the flavors of other condiments with a Dijon mustard and lemon juice dressing.
Add a tablespoon of mayonnaise if you can't fathom egg salad without it. Finally, consider a dash of hot sauce to add heat to the mix before blending it with other ingredients.
Tartar sauce can be tangy and rich, so balance the flavors with extra ingredients like turmeric, smoked paprika, or chili powder, and include fresh herbs like celery to add crunch.
