Is Watermelon Keto-Friendly?
By HALDAN KIRSCH
The sweet, luscious, and juicy flavor of watermelon makes it the perfect fruit for summer. While no kind of fruit is really considered a gluttonous snack, watermelon might still be off-limits for anybody following a certain nutritional diet, so do people following a keto plan have to keep their hands off this fruit?
Watermelon can be keto-friendly, but in limited quantities. According to The Kitchn, most people on a ketogenic diet can eat 20 to 50 grams of net carbohydrates — found by subtracting the amount of fiber in a food from the amount of carbs it contains — daily. A cup of watermelon contains roughly 11 grams of carbohydrates.
Healthline still recommends watermelon for those who follow the keto diet, as this fruit is high in lycopene, antioxidants, and a variety of other vitamins and nutrients. The amount of net carbs in watermelon puts it on par with strawberries, another summer favorite, with both relatively well-suited to a keto diet.
