Is It Actually Dangerous To Stand In Front Of A Running Microwave?
BY Eibhlis Gale-Coleman
The sage advice, "Don't stand in front of the microwave," seems to be little more than a modern-day superstition. However, the warning is somewhat valid.
It turns out that microwaves can leak radiation under specific circumstances, such as a faulty machine, exposing you to dangerous electromagnetic radiation.
These waves can cause serious burns and long-term health complications. While fully functioning microwaves are technically fine, any damaged product poses a risk of exposure.
These leaks are impossible to spot with the naked eye, so the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends not standing in front of microwaves during operation, just in case.
There may be warning signs like broken doors or seals. Radiation detectors can ensure that your microwave isn't leaking is to invest; otherwise, follow the FDA’s advice.
