Is Canned Crab Meat Always Cooked?
BY AUSTIN HAVENS-BOWEN
Just like canned tuna, salmon, or sardines, canned crab is already cooked and can be eaten directly out of the container. It's typically boiled or steamed before getting canned.
The crab meat is often pasteurized, which is the process of removing potentially harmful germs and bacteria. It also helps preserve the canned shellfish while it sits on the shelf.
After you open a can of crab, drain the juice and rinse the meat off before using it for the best flavor and to remove any preservatives left on the crab.
Canned crab meat comes in various types like colossal, jumbo lump, lump, backfin, and claw, each with unique qualities and prices.
Use your canned crab of choice in recipes like crab cakes, cheesy dip, seafood-stuffed shells, crab rangoon, pasta salad, or crab salad for a delicious meal or appetizer.
