Indian Keema Takes Cottage Pie To A Spicy New Tier
BY AUTUMN SWIERS
Cottage pie, made of layered ground meat and mashed potatoes, is a simple, comforting meal. If you prefer more spice in your food, try making this pie with Indian keema.
Keema, kheema, or qeema is a traditional North Indian dish usually made of ground lamb and slow-simmered aromatics like onions, garlic, and green chiles.
The dish gets even more flavor with the addition of spices like cumin, turmeric, ginger, garam masala, and Kashmiri chili powder, among others depending on the recipe.
While keema is typically served with naan, rice, or inside samosas, it makes an excellent base for cottage pie, creating an impressive one-pot meal.
Try incorporating keema spices into the meat and veggies in your cottage pie recipe. You can use any kind of ground meat you prefer, whether it be lamb, beef, or even goat.
Just make sure that meat has at least 15% fat content to ensure a soft, rich texture. You can also blend turmeric into your mashed potatoes before layering them on top.
