Ina Garten's 'Outrageous Brownies' Really Have A Punch
BY MICHELLE WELSCH
Ina Garten’s "outrageous" brownies include walnuts, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and vanilla, which is just the beginning of the overstuffed ingredients list.
In addition to six ounces of bitter chocolate and over a pound of chocolate chips, Garten adds a pound of butter for buttery, chewy brownies that can serve nearly two dozen guests.
Ina Garten’s original recipe calls for baking the batter for 20 minutes, then removing the baking sheet to tap it lightly against the oven shelf or a solid countertop.
The technique removes excess air that may have gathered between the pan’s base and the batter. Return the tray to the oven and bake until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
Instead of serving them warm, Ina Garten chills the brownies to create a fudge-like layer that contrasts with the crunchy textures of the added walnuts and chocolate chips.
The cut brownies result in 20 cubes that you can serve immediately or freeze for up to three months when wrapped in plastic wrap and foil.
