In The South, There's An Art To Making The Best Tomato Sandwich

Gwinnett Magazine surveyed readers about what a Southern tomato sandwich should contain, concluding you need white bread, an unpeeled tomato, black pepper, salt, and mayonnaise.
Readers had some nuanced responses, like that the fresh white bread is never toasted and has to be so soft it "sticks to the back of your teeth."
It's always mayonnaise, never a mayo-ish alternative. According to respondents, Duke's is the No. 1 choice, followed by Hellmann's and Blue Plate.
While you can try variations, if you want to enjoy the tomato sandwich Southern-style, simple and classic is the way to go.
