How To Season Your Cast Iron Skillet With Olive Oil Successfully
BY KAREN HART
Creating the glossy patina that is synonymous with seasoning a cast iron skillet or pan involves a little culinary alchemy. To achieve it, reach for the extra virgin olive oil.
It’s recommended that the oil you use for seasoning has a smoke point above 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Extra virgin olive oil’s smoking point of 410 degrees Fahrenheit is optimal.
To properly season your cast iron pan with extra virgin olive oil, simply preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Then, paint the pan with an oil-soaked paper towel until shiny.
Pop your pan or skillet into your hot oven for 30 minutes. This process will season your cast iron and leave it in tip-top shape to use when you’re ready.
