How To Perfect Crispy Onion Rings Without Any Deep Frying
BY Julia Holland
Traditionally, onion rings are deep fried to achieve that shatteringly crisp breading, but you can get the same result in less than 30 minutes using your oven and no oil.
To start, slice your peeled onion across its horizontal diameter, ensuring the rings are thick so there's more surface area for the breading. Then, evenly coat them in flour.
Next, coat them in a thick, wet batter that will stay put as they bake, unlike a thin batter that can slide off. For a thicker batter, add buttermilk, flour, and butter to the eggs.
Once done, coat them in your breadcrumb blend. Your oven will help you bake larger batches compared to deep-frying, but you’ll need to ensure the baking sheet isn’t overcrowded.
Arrange the rings on your ungreased baking sheet, placing smaller rings inside larger ones. Then, add a light dusting of cooking spray over your baking sheet of onion rings.
Slide them in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Depending on the oven, your rings should take around 20 minutes, flipping them halfway to three-quarters of the way through.
