How British Pigs In A Blanket Are Different From The American Version
BY Claudia Alarcón
In the U.S., pigs in a blanket are small cocktail sausages encased in flaky pastries. However, their U.K. counterpart — pigs in blankets — is different.
A sausage of any size wrapped in pastry is a sausage roll in Britain, while pigs in blankets are sausages wrapped in streaky bacon, either pan-fried or baked until crispy.
They are usually made with pork chipolatas or Cumberland sausages and can be enhanced with the addition of a glaze, like honey-mustard, or a sprinkling of fresh rosemary or thyme.
In the U.K., pigs in blankets are a traditional addition to the Christmas table as a side dish for the turkey-based meal. They are also often served in a Boxing Day brunch buffet.
