Horehound Candies Are What Flavor Exactly?
BY James Andersen
Horehound candies stand apart from others for their distinct flavor, one that’s delicious but difficult to recognize. Many have different opinions on what it actually tastes like.
Some describe its taste as bittersweet, while others say it’s a cross between root beer and black licorice. A few even say it’s similar to marshmallows or menthol cough drops.
However, its unique flavor comes from a herb called Marrubium vulgare, known as horehound or white horehound for its white flowers.
This member of the mint family has been used in medicine since the 1st century, and it continues to be used today in popular medicines like Ricola cough drops.
