That extra piece of bread in the middle of the sandwich isn't simply for show. Instead, it acts as a structural support that provides stability and helps keep the ingredients together.
The multiple pieces of toasted bread in a club sandwich also add texture integrity and can soak up some of the flavors from the other ingredients.
